2012 CHINESE CONTEMPORARY ART AWARD (CCAA)

International jury announces the winners of the Chinese Contemporary Art Awards CCAA:
The winners are Geng Jianyi (Lifetime Contribution Artist), Pak Sheung Chuen (Best Artist) and Yan Xing (Best Young Artist).

Established by Uli Sigg in 1997 as an independent non-profit entity, CCAAʼs purpose is to give awards to Chinese artists and art critics who show outstanding achievement in artistic creation, and its analysis and critique. CCAA encourages their development and enhances awareness and appreciation to a wider public for what Chinese art contributes to contemporary Chinese culture. It has since then become an institution of significance for the Chinese art scene, with the CCAA winners becoming well recognized
also by the international art world.

GENG JIAN YI (Lifetime Contribution Award): As a practitioner of Chinese contemporary art for over thirty years, Geng Jianyi has moved beyond the limits of his times in many ways. In a world ever more subsumed by fashion, speed, short attention spans, the ups and downs of global financial capital and politics, leading to a sense of provisionality and precariousness, of anonymity and plural subjectivity, Geng Jianyi has evoked and subtly verified the fragile potential of the singular subject in an sincere and
imaginative manner. This jury wishes to award a unique artist of outstanding artistic achievement.

PAK SHEUNG CHUEN (Best Artist Award): Pak Sheung Chuen manages to produce works that, against all odds, are recognizable as art. Emphasizing its intimate relationship with daily life by engaging with everyday situations and common people, his art is almost invisible, almost impossible to document, but manages to explore the human condition in all its complexities and with loving precision.

YAN XING (Best Young Artist Award): As a outstanding young artist, Yan Xing's work revolves around his personal identity but also beyond. The unmediated and direct quality that underpins his work is a poignant reflection of his submergence under popular culture and contemporary art. Ostensibly creating correlations with contemporary Chinese reality, he implicitly addresses international art currents. His prefers performance and video in his artistic creation.

The Jury made the choices in view of the overall context of Chinese contemporary art today:
The jury truly appreciates the initial selection of nominated artists by a group of six very informed active nominators. Almost all the artists amongst the 45 nominated prove that art emerges in many ways, happens in many unpredicatible places and can also evade the market.

Many Chinese artists seem also to be convinced that spectacle is something that has a short term life only; and that size is not the same as scale. While scale is a humanist, plural and worldly condition, size is an economic condition of mere measurement, unrelated to the complexity of past-present-future temporalities and imaginations.

more and more from a stance which says that art has to be commodified, or that it has to be cynical or ironical. Chinese contemporary art is becoming more and more open and sensitive to many issues, since it is part of a world that is much broader, interconnected and ridden by conflicts, inequality, prejudice, ecological crises and more.

The members of the jury consist of internationally renowned experts on contemporary art. They are Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (curator of documenta 13, Kassel), Chris Dercon (director of Tate Modern, London), Feng Boyi (artistic director of He Xiangning Art Musuem), Huang Zhuan (Director of OCT,Shenzhen), Li Zhenhua (independent curator) , Lars Nittve (director of M+ Museum of Visual Arts, Hongkong) and Uli Sigg (founder of CCAA).
