Artist's Statement:
Back in my hometown of Dandong, on the border between China and North Korea. Crossing the river, what is in front of me is this other country - North Korea. I stare at the scene, which carries me back to my childhood. That teenager was full of Communist fantasies, which in contrast to today’s reality have been lost in disillusionment.
Curator’s Comment:
Zhao Liang’s work does not only show the experiences of an individual, he also represents the generation of people born in the 1970s and provides an informal process of research on the relationship between China and North Korea from the 80s to the 90s. The boundary between Communism and Capitalism has been fuzzy since 1989, when patterns of the world have become gradually defrosted. Zhao’s work particularly reflects on people’s survival condition and the vanishing of idealism. At the border of China and North Korea, the artist seems to have found a time capsule for each generation, through them China verifies its development.
