Artists-in-Labs: The China/Swiss Residence Exchange

Many artists are currently exploring scientific, technologic and cultural developments of the 21st century and are engaged in critical discussions about ethics. The «Artists-in-Labs» programme aims at producing and sharing common ideas, at expanding of dialogue and opening eyes for contributions to the major challenges of our time by artists and scientists. The programme gives artists from all disciplines a chance to work in a scientific laboratory during a given time. The programme directors are seeking opportunities for cooperation with leading laboratories and intending to stimulate the creativity of the artists as good as possible. Key issues are the search of interpretations of nature, matter and human needs, but also to reflect on the interest in understanding, discovering and creating in order to develop sustainable new ideas.

The programme «Artists-in-Labs» has been established in 2004. For the first time since its inception, a non-Western country has been added to the programme for the new period of 2009/2010. Selected artists from China and Switzerland will thus be offered a five months stay in Swiss and Chinese scientific institutions respectively. The focus will be on research fields such as environment, water, permafrost and biology.

From December 2009 to April 2010 two Swiss artists will work in scientific labs in China, while two Chinese artists will stay in two labs in Switzerland. The results of their residencies are planned to be shown during the festival Culturescapes between October and December 2010 in Switzerland.

The artists and their projects
After the application deadline and evaluation period in August 2009 the Artists-in-Labs jury decided to grant residencies to the following four artists from Switzerland and China:
