A.I.M

From the 80s with the beginning of consciousness of freedom and individuality in Chinese contemporary art, into the 90s with east-west cultural conflict in contemporary art and intellectual discussions, towards the new millennium with the beginning of our discussion on the subject of globalisation.

[Multi-Media Arts International Lab & Forum] attempts to present the changes in contemporary culture with regard to history, category, mentality as well as society, through a combination of discussions and multiple types of methodology. The forum promotes contemporary culture and contemporary science and technology, facilitating a real exchange at the highest level, the involved scope including: film, digital art, electronic art, multi-media art, new media art etc. with regard to the present situation and discussions of development inside and outside of China. Additionally Chinese and international experts are invited to discuss the use of technology in culture and the influence of culture on technology.

Exploring, through multiple perspectives and cross-cultural studies, the combined influence of contemporary art and technology on globalisation.

T.O.P.I.C

Independent Uniqueness:

Discussing the importance and uniqueness of individuality with regard to independent creation, aiming at introducing the possible creation of technology for art, and the possibility of more individualisation of art, as with author’s films etc. The discussion of this topic mainly involves individual case studies and individual reflections on the culture of present society.

Knowledge and Art In Balance:
Discussing the importance of knowledge in the present world, such as the knowledge of "light" adjustment in the new media art ‘Light art and Artificial lights exhibition’ in ZKM, combining the usage of physics/chemistry/mechanics/computers in a multi-facet representation. How can we balance the cultural function of such knowledge in the involved multiple knowledge structures, taking into account the similarities and differences of knowledge and art?

Information Overload:

In discussing the situation of the worldwide information volume increase, from the perspectives of both artists and scientists, how do we face the continuously expanding electronic world and the possibilities of the human brain in the real world? This involves rational use of information resources in the development of society, as well as how to face the reality of information overload? Two ways of countering such information handling include strengthening of computer hardware and screening of valid resources.

Distributed Culture:
Discussing distribution and knowledge - the sharing and inter-mixing of virtual resources in a distributed storage, as in the example of museums/galleries/independent spaces and independent artist’s, placing importance on the individual space/artist and their particular functions and relations. In the present situation, how can we cooperate and share information resources, and as such construct a complete culture industry concept? If comparing and learning from the experience of the creative industry advanced by China and world-wide attention on contemporary art received by China, what will the future be?

Existing Media and NEW in New Media Arts:
Most importantly discussing what new media consists of, as well as the emergence of new and old media technology. Additionally, discussing the transformation of technology and the influence of art on the practise of technology. In discussing the difference of new and existing in new media, the most important issue is the practical categorisation of new and existing in media art with regard to concept/medium/technology/material and science.
